Main and auxiliary engine reliability sits at the centre of a vessel's commercial performance, and nowhere is that felt more sharply than on a busy Indian coast. A machinery defect at Mumbai, JNPT (Nhava Sheva), Kochi, New Mangalore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam or Paradip can put a laycan at risk, and the quality of the local response often decides whether a vessel sails on schedule or slips into costly off-hire. ARCSHIP provides planned and emergency engine overhauling and marine mechanical solutions at berths, at anchorage and in dry dock at India's commercial ports, working to maker and classification-society standards.
The aim is a repair that holds. Whether the work is a scheduled cylinder-unit overhaul or an unplanned defect that surfaces mid-voyage, the scope is set against the engine maker's running-hour tables and the vessel's planned maintenance system, then closed out with the attending surveyor so the credit is captured on the class record.
Main-engine overhauls done to maker limits
Two-stroke and four-stroke main engines from the common OEMs, MAN B&W, MAN Energy Solutions and Wartsila among them, follow well-defined overhaul intervals. Cylinder units, running gear and bearings are opened, measured against maker wear limits and renewed or refitted, then re-commissioned with performance checks before the vessel returns to service. Much of this can be completed afloat at an Indian port when the berth window and permits allow, reserving dry dock for work that needs the vessel out of the water.
- Cylinder units, de-carbonising, liner and piston-crown inspection, and renewal of rings, gland packings and cooling connections.
- Running gear, crosshead, connecting-rod and main-bearing checks with clearance and alignment readings recorded against maker limits.
- Cylinder heads and valves, grinding and lapping of exhaust valves, seat renewal and hydraulic-tightening to specified torque.
- Fuel and injection, overhaul and calibration of pumps and injectors, followed by opening-pressure and spray-pattern testing.
Turbochargers, pumps and coolers
Turbocharger servicing is a routine part of the calendar: rotor removal, bearing renewal, cleaning and balancing, and re-installation with clearances set to maker figures. Sea-water and fresh-water pumps, purifiers and compressors are overhauled on the same attendance, and plate and shell-and-tube coolers are cleaned, gasketed and pressure tested before being returned to the system. Pressure testing of coolers, heat exchangers and pipework confirms integrity before start-up and gives the surveyor documented evidence of the work.
The cost of a machinery defect is measured less in the repair itself than in the off-hire it causes when the response is slow.
Planning the work around the survey calendar
Overhauls read best when they are timed against the vessel's statutory and class schedule rather than treated as isolated jobs. Continuous machinery survey items, MMD and DG Shipping requirements and the attendance of the classification society, whether Indian Register of Shipping, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ABS or another IACS member, can be aligned so that one port call clears several dues at once.
- Advise scope and running hours early so units, gaskets, bearings and spares can be pre-positioned near the port.
- Confirm permits and access for hot work, enclosed-space entry and lifting under the port's rules.
- Align with the survey calendar so class attendance and machinery work happen on the same call.
- Combine with calibration, an overhaul is the natural moment to complete instrument and gauge calibration.
Why single-point accountability matters
Delivering overhaul, mechanical, calibration and safety work under one QHSE system, with a single point of accountability, shortens the critical path and removes the interface risk of coordinating separate contractors across a tight berth window. With group offices at Navi Mumbai, Kochi, Port Blair and Udupi, ARCSHIP can mobilise to ports on both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, giving owners more predictable machinery repair and less time off-hire.
